Mohawk
Section the hair into three sections by putting partings in line with the centre of the eyes, going from the forhead all the way to the nape of the neck. Angle the partings towards the centre of the neck so that they almost meet at a point. This will help you to create the classic Mohawk shape when you are styling the hair.
Then curl the middle section of hair using heated rollers. Make sure on the first section you just use one roller but then if you need to use two rollers next to each other to curl the hair. If you only use one roller it does not matter too much if the hair falls over the edge of the rollers as you will be doing a lot of backcombing anyway to help with the shape.
Plait the two outer sections. This can be any type of plait for example French or fishtail. Whilst you are doing this the rollers will have time to cool and set.
Then take out the rollers and backcomb the hair so that it stands as vertically as possible. Then you can style it so that it stays completely vertical by backcombing all the hair together and smoothing it out.
Alternatively you can smooth the hair backwards to create a smaller more rounded shape to the Mohawk.
Modern take on the mohawk
Section the hair horizontally into four sections.
Put the four sections into ponytails, securing with hairbands.
Backcomb each section of hair.
Starting with the front section wrap the ponytails around the hairbands and grip into place.
