80’s Hair
In the 1980’s curly hair was extremely popular, so much so that a lot of people both men and women had their hair permed into tight spiral curls. Therefore partings in the hair were not often used as centre partings especially were not very flattering with the tight curls. However some people did have fringes or alternatively the hair at the front of the hair was styled to have a winged effect that spread over the top of the hair and sometimes down the side. Also in the 1980’s volume in the hair was very fashionable and so people wanted their hair to be as big as possible. In order to achieve this they would backcomb their hair and use a lot of hairspray which resulted in the hairstyles being very secure and rigid. Also in the 1980’s a lot of the hairstyles were not age specific so young people and adults would have similar hairstyles.
The Jheri curl was a popular style of curl especially for people with Afro- Caribbean hair. It involved the very tight natural curls to be chemically permed to create looser, more bouncy curls.
The mullet
This hairstyle is created when the hair is cut short at the front and the sides but is long at the back.
The singer Billy Ray Cyrus was one celebrity who helped to make the mullet famous in the 1980’s.
Madonna helped to make the bow a very popular accessory in
the 1980’s.
Curling
Curling the hair using heated tongs is one way to created 80’s curls without getting a perm.
Section off the hair at the very front of the head and down one of the side of the face and clip it out of the way as you will be styling this last.
Curl small sections of hair starting with the hair closest to the nape of the head, section off the rest of the hair so that it does not get in the way.
Curl each section of hair in alternate directions and then curl another layer of the hair.
When you reach the hair on top of the head you may want to curl the hair in a different direction so that the curls sit on top of the head rather than cascading down as much as the rest of the curls.
Direction the curls so that there is no obvious parting in the hair.
Make sure the hair has had an adequate amount of time to cool and set before you carry on styling the hair.
Then use an afro comb to gently backcomb the curls so that as much volume and texture as possible is created.
Curling using a diffuser
This is another method for creating 80’s style curls and texture.
Spray a light covering of water into the hair, not too much as this will just add to the drying time.
Also apply a generous amount of hair mouse and work it through all of the hair.
Set a hairdryer with a diffuser onto a high heat and speed setting and dry the hair by placing hair into the diffuser and pushing the hair up using the diffuser.
You may need to scrunch the hair firmly to help the curls to form.
Styling the front of the hair
Spray some water into the hair and also apply a lot of mousse into the full length of the hair.
Use a nozzle attachment on the hairdryer and put the hairdryer on a high heat and speed setting.
Dry the hair using your hand or a brush to encourage the hair up and over to the side.
Then spray a lot of hairspray.
Use the hair dry on medium heat and speed settings to dry the hairspray and set the hair. Hold the
hair you with
your fingers as you do this.
You can then
add accessories to the hair such as ribbons and headbands which was popular in
the
80’s.
Alternatively
pin the front sections of the hair back so that only the curls at the back of
the head are
